Box #2: Language Policy & Literacy

Overview

The Literacy and Language Policy Curriculum Artifact Box (Box #2) contains materials and course plans that can be used to contextualize the ways literacy is practiced in Senegal schools and educational institutions, such as the daaras or Qu'ranic schools and the women's literacy programs in the interior of the country.

These materials range from Qu'ranic writing boards, pictures of individuals engaged in reading and learning activities, grammar books for one (i.e. Wolof) of the six national languages, and videos that put the use of Wolof and French (the "Official" language in Senegal) in context.

Objectives

Course plans are linked to educational standards , and originally were designed for a 600 level college course in speech-language pathology but can be easily modified for a range of grades, skill levels, and learning styles.
